Ice Hockey
Hockey is one of the team sports that are being played around the world. Hockey can be classified in various types. There are 5 common types of hockey such as the field hockey, ice hockey, street hockey, inline roller hockey, and quad roller hockey.
Ice hockey is played by driving a disc of round shape which they call a puck. They use a hockey stick to maneuver the puck and try to hit the puck into the opponent team’s goal. Two teams are involved in the game. The team that scores more is the winner. To prevent the other team from scoring, they have to defend their team’s net. Of course, players also have to be good skaters because the matches are played on ice!
Now the most popular type of hockey is probably ice hockey. Ice hockey is being played mostly in the whole of North America and Europe plus other countries globally. They also have a governing body known as the International Ice Hockey Federation. The highest honor in the amateur ranks must be the Winter Olympics. For top professional honors, the best professional league is the National Hockey League of North America or the NHL. However, there are some differences in the rules between NHL and the Olympics.
In field hockey, a small hard ball is deployed instead of a round flat disc. The reason is because field hockey is not played on a smooth flat surface. Instead, field hockey is played on either of the following: natural grass, gravel, artificial sand turfs, or water based sand turfs. This type of game is played by both men and women. In fact a lot of people around the globe, especially in Europe, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and South Africa play field hockey. There is even a governing body called the International Hockey Federation or FIH. Since 1908, field hockey has been one of the sports played every summer Olympic Games.
Street Hockey is also known as road hockey. Other terms are dek hockey, ground hockey, or ball hockey. This is the type of hockey played out on the streets. Sometimes, the players don’t use roller skates for street hockey.
For inline roller hockey, it's about the same as ice hockey as it uses inline skates with wheels, not blades. There are still two teams with four skaters each plus one goal keeper or goalie. Quad roller hockey is the same but is not played on ice. The players also use quad skates, thus the name. Other emerging forms of hockey can be found all over the world. Some players use tennis ball, some came up with air hockey, and many others.
