Skate Sharpening

Most people would not know that hockey skates are also being sharpened. And it’s not the usual sharpening that you do for scissors or knives. Skate sharpening is different. There are specific hockey skate sharpeners for this. There’s more to skate sharpening than you know of. Skate sharpening involves the terms hollow and radius. If you try to inspect the blades of an ice skate, you will notice that the hockey skates’ blades are around 1/8 of an inch thick each. Also, the bottom of the blade of a hockey skate is cupped inward. That cup which is inward is what we call the hollow. This is when hockey skate sharpening comes in.

The hollow has two edges, that is the outside and the inside edge. The hollow of your hockey skates is like a semi-circle. That hollow allows your hockey skates to grip on ice. You will want a deeper hollow to make your blades sharper. The sharper your hockey skate’s blades are, the better you can maneuver. That’s why you need to know how to sharpen hockey skate.

If your blades are sharper, you can easily make turns and even hold edges. However, it can affect your speed as it will dig deeper into the ice. Also, sharper blades will make it more difficult to halt. Skate sharpening is thus very important. You should take note that lighter skaters can have deeper hollows meaning sharper blades. On the other hand, hockey players who are relatively heavier shouldn’t go for sharper blades as the weight added to the sharpness will only let the player skate deeper into the ice. Thus, the player will just have a hard time skating.

The right skate sharpening is needed to achieve the right blades that will work out for you. Some players prefer to have their skates sharpened at a store because they don’t know how to sharpen ice hockey skates. Plus, some don’t have the tools like handheld hockey skate sharpeners. It would be better to resort to the stores as a specialized store will have a hockey skate sharpening machine. If you don’t want to spend on that, you can invest on a cheap hockey skates blade sharpener. You can probably find a hockey skates sharpener from where you purchased your skates. Also, you can find a hockey skate sharpener online or in stores that sell hockey equipment. Just make sure that if you sharpen your skates on your own, remember to check out guides you can find online.
