Protective Hockey Gear

There is danger in any physical sport. This is why protective gear is necessary to ensure a safe and fun game. It is important for hockey players to have the right kind of protection before engaging in the sport. Protective hockey gear includes helmets, padding, and a face masks.

Many hockey games have erupted into violence due to the physical demands of the game. Aggressive players are occasionally the unfortunate result of an aggressive game. Each player, including the goalie, is also equipped with a stick and looking to project the puck. The force and speed behind the small puck alone is reason enough to wear the proper protective hockey gear at all times. It is pointless to wear protection if it does not fit or cover the appropriate area.

A helmet should fit so that it is comfortable, does not hinder vision, and will absorb shock if it is hit. Without a helmet, there is a risk of concussion, losing teeth, broken nose, and any other possible injury of being hit in the head with a stick or puck. Some helmets are built with a mask attached and some are not. If the helmet does not have a mask, it is important to wear one with it. A face mask protects the mouth, nose, and eyes. An important thing to consider when looking for a mask is the channel for air flow. The protective equipment is meant to ensure a safe game, not take away from its enjoy-ability.

Shoulder pads and chest protectors should not be overlooked. The rest of the body is built to better withstand impact and injury without being life threatening. However, being on skates increases the risk of falling or being knocked down. This can lead to injury as severe as breaking and dislocating shoulders, elbows, and wrists. Correct size is very important for the maximum protection. Additional pieces which are helpful are gloves and joint covering pads. Elbows and knees are always a high impact zone for falls. Gloves can protect the hands from wear from holding the stick or falling on pavement or ice. Shin guards are usually worn by the goalie to avoid injury from the player's sticks and puck that may be traveling at a high speed. It may be a bit uncomfortable but protective hockey gear is worth getting used to for the sake of staying safe from possible serious injury.
