Underwear may not seem like it would be very important as far as hockey equipment goes. However, hockey jocks & underwear are made specifically for this sport for a reason. Underwear for hockey must be comfortable because it is the closest item to the body. All ice hockey players appreciate the balance of warmth that it provides while playing in a cold arena. Playing to maximum performance has a lot to do with comfort. Most ice hockey underwear has extra insulation for warmth, with some type of moisture control to prevent chafing. Being uncomfortable, sweaty, or too cold will hinder the ability to play competitively.
A hockey jock is worn by males in order to hold a protective cup in place. Some male specific ice hockey pants have a built in cup, but players recommend also wearing a hockey jock and cup for added protection. This is especially true for the goalie in a position where the puck is constantly coming toward the body at full force. The important thing to remember is that safety and comfort go hand in hand. Do not wear anything that will restrict the ability to move freely. There are different types of cup that are made to fit the preference of the person wearing it. If one happens to be uncomfortable, try others until one finally feels comfortable and protective. Unattached hockey jocks & underwear are meant to be worn together and should both be comfortable.
The cup built into Bauer hockey underwear is wider than most, which may not be a good thing for some people. If it is too wide, it can cause chafing. However, it is ideal for someone who wants or needs more room. They soften the impact of any direct hits to the groin but some designs also extend to cover areas that lead to the kidneys.
An innovative material that some hockey underwear uses is called Wikmax. This fabric actually moves moisture from the inside of the underwear to the outside to ensure constant dryness. Women who play hockey need protection also. There are both separate and attached types of underwear that help the player stay warm, dry, and comfortable no matter what the setting of the game may be. Basic padding and other safety equipment would be uncomfortable to most people who are not wearing any underwear. It may seem like excessive layering, but it would be more comfortable than sweating under the layers and risking chafing.
